- [1] Introduction-------------------------------------------------------
-
- [1.1] A WORD FROM ME.
-
- Thanks for downloading Doomania (or getting it on a disk, or whatever).
- I hope that it makes Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Heretic, and Hexen
- more enjoyable for you to play. Since version 1.0 (Doomaster), there have
- been some huge improvements. Be sure to look over them in the VERSION INFO
- section below.
-
- [1.2] VERSION INFO.
-
- v1.0
- ----
- Initial Release
-
- v2.0
- ----
- Completely new menu driven selection process.
-
- Removed some options. Instead of selecting "Play Doom 2 without sound
- or music", you can now select "Play Doom 2 without sound" and then
- "Play Doom 2 without music." If you're angry about having to press
- more keys, skip to the last change I've listed. It'll make you feel
- better.
-
- I completely changed the way Doomania runs Doom 2. You won't notice this
- change but it's much better. Trust me.
-
- New nag screen at the end. (Now it's much prettier when I beg you for money).
-
- Generally improved code and menus.
-
- Completely new documentation.
-
- And now the biggest improvement:...You no longer have to press ENTER at
- the "THIS VERSION OF DOOM HAS BEEN MODIFIED..." screen when you run
- a WAD file.
-
- v2.5
- ----
- Everything looks MUCH better! Menus have shadows, I have a new color
- scheme for the entire program, in fact, Doomania looks like a real
- DOS utility that you use to actually get stuff done!
-
- Mouse support! I tested Doomania with and without a mouse, and it
- seems to work pretty smoothly, but let me know if you have any problems
- with the mouse.
-
- Doomania no longer has to be in your Doom II directory! I figured out
- how to read from a file, and it now has a configuration file, called
- DOOMANIA.CFG.
-
- I've added several new options, including playing and recording .LMP
- files, and an option to add your own parameters, so that you can
- still use parameters not directly supported by Doomania.
-
- Doomania now checks the filenames that you enter, so that it warns you
- if the file you entered doesn't exist. Again, please let me know if you
- have any problems with this. On a similar note, Doomania also checks
- your filenames for extensions, so that you no longer have to input
- them without. With or without, it doesn't matter. Whatever floats your
- boat.
-
- Doomania shows you some information on the main menu screen. For
- instance, if you've added FUNK.WAD, a little box will pop up telling
- you so. Try clicking on these boxes, or if you don't have a mouse,
- pressing the letter that is highlighted in white. Most of the time it
- will de-select the option, except for the following cases:
-
- READING parmfile$: This is the box the is displayed when you select
- "READ AN ALTERNATE PARAMETER FILE". If you click on it Doomania will
- show you the contents of the file.
-
- OTHER PARAMETERS ADDED: otherparms$: This is displayed when you use
- the option MANUALLY ADD PARAMETERS. Usually it just displays the
- parameters that you added, but sometimes you may notice that it
- has something looking like "--CLICK->". This just means that the
- parameters you added are too long to display on the main menu screen,
- but you can click on it (or press O) to display them.
-
- I've basically fixed stuff, cleaned stuff up, optimized stuff, etc.
- The code is still a mess, though. I'm planning on fixing it up and
- releasing it as version 2.6.
-
- v3.0
- ----
- Doomania now supports Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Heretic!
-
- The configuration process is slightly improved.
-
- New title screen.
-
- Doomania now supports up to nine .WADs.
-
- Other various minor changes.
-
- I figued I was so close to having 3.0, I might as well clean up the
- code for that release instead of 2.6, so I did. It's optimized, sleek,
- wonderful.
-
- I've added many improvements required due to the added games which
- are there but you hopefully won't notice because they'll blend in.
-
- KNOWN BUGS: The keyboard and mouse generally do not work that well
- together. If you use the keyboard to highlight an option and then
- click on another with the mouse, it screws up the menu. (It changes
- the highlighted option to whatever one you clicked on). This can be
- fixed by exiting whatever menu it is and re-entering, but it's still
- a pain. So as a general rule, use one or the other, but NOT both.
-
- v3.1
- ----
- I fixed the first KNOWN BUG, the keyboard/mouse "incompatablilty".
- It was actually a lot easier to fix than I originally thought it would
- be.
-
- I changed the title screen a wee bit.
-
- When you exited Doomania in 3.0 without running a game, it would paint
- your background gray. In addition, after running a game and pressing a
- key to stop the flashing PLEASE DISTRIBUTE DOOMANIA message, it would
- clear your screen. Both of these bugs are fixed.
-
- I documented the improved PWAD selection process and the command line
- switches.
-
- I fixed quite a few bugs which surfaced in v3.0.
-
- I made a few small changes in the code and tested the final program
- quite a bit to make up for not doing it at all for 3.0. You shouldn't
- find any bugs in this version.
-
- I added a FILE_ID.DIZ to the ZIP. (Ooohh!)
-
- v3.5
- ----
- Indexed READMEOR.DIE.
-
- I fixed a bug which occured when you used the right mouse button.
-
- Doomania now supports Hexen!
-
- v3.6
- ----
- I fixed a very minor bug which prevented Doomania from running at all
- and occured every time you attempted to run the program.
-
- I fixed another bug which occured when you use the right mouse button.
-
- I fixed some problems with warping.
-
- I enhanced Hexen support a tiny bit.
-
- [2] Running Doomania---------------------------------------------------
-
- [2.1] INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING.
-
- To run Doomania, unzip it into any directory you choose, and type...DOOMANIA
- (Where do I come up with this stuff). If this is your first time using
- Doomania, you will enter a setup program, (After the nag screen, of course),
- which will ask you for the drive and directory that DOOM.EXE, DOOM2.EXE,
- HERETIC.EXE, and HEXEN.EXE are in. If you do not have the game it asks for,
- just hit ENTER without typing anything. It would be in your best interest to
- answer honestly and promptly. (Note: Doomania doesn't check the path you
- enter. So if you screwed up and the game you chose doesn't run, hit "C" at
- the title screen to reconfigure). Doomania shouldn't automaticaaly
- re-configure as long as you have a (VALID) DOOMANIA.CFG in the same directory
- as DOOMANIA.EXE. If you want to re-configure, hit "C" at the title/nag screen.
-
- After configuring Doomania, you can run it with the following switches:
-
- DOOMANIA DOOM
- DOOMANIA DOOM2
- DOOMANIA HERETIC
- DOOMANIA HEXEN
-
- This basically skips the GAME SELECTION menu and goes directly to the
- main menu with Doomania running the game you typed on the command line.
-
- (NOTE: Doomania will not run a game you do not have configured. For
- instance, if you haven't configured DOOMANIA to run HERETIC and you
- type DOOMANIA HERETIC, you will still get the standard game selection
- screen.)
-
- [2.2] THE MAIN SCREEN.
-
- Anyway, after configuring Doomania and selecting the game you want to
- run in one way or another, you should get to a screen like this:
-
- (NOTE: If you only have one of the three games Doomania supports, it
- won't ask you to select it but will automaticaaly run for that game).
-
- (OTHER NOTE: Whenever I have the word GAME$ below, it stands for whatever
- game you are using Doomania for).
-
- Please choose an option.
-
- Run GAME$ now.
- Warp to a level.
- Clear all settings.
- Choose an external PWAD file.
- Record a demo (.LMP).
- Play a demo (.LMP).
- Manually add parameters.
- Other options.
- Exit Doomania.
-
- You use your arrow keys to highlight an option, and then enter to
- select it. Or if you have a mouse, you can just click on the options
- you want to select. On any menu you can press ESC to go back to the
- previous menu.
-
- Let's go over the options one by one.
-
- Run GAME$ now: This runs GAME$ with the options you have selected.
-
- Warp to a level: This brings up a screen with all the levels listed. The
- warping process is slightly different in Doom II and Hexen mode and other
- game mode. In Doom II and Hexen mode, you just type the number of the level
- you want to warp to (i.e. 23), and hit enter. In other game mode, first you
- type in the episode you want to warp to (i.e. 2), and THEN the level (i.e. 6).
-
- Clear all settings: Lets you start over again.
-
- Choose an external PWAD file: Takes you to THE PWAD SELECTION SCREEN.
-
- Record a demo (.LMP). : Lets you record a demo of you playing GAME$.
- Of course, I have no idea WHY people should want to see YOU playing,
- and if you are so over-inflated with ego that you think that they do,
- then you need help!!! But I put it in anyway. It gives you a little
- input box where you enter the filename you want to give your .LMP.
-
- Play a demo (.LMP). : Lets you play an .LMP file. Type /D to search.
-
- Manually add parameters: Lets you input any parameters you want! I
- figured that you would like the sense of freedom, seeing as your
- mom still picks out your clothes. This way, you can add any parameters
- that Doomania doesn't directly support.
-
- Other Options: Brings up more options. We'll go over them below.
-
- Exit Doomania: Duh.
-
- [2.3] PWAD SELECTION SCREEN.
-
- You can select up to nine .WADS using Doomania. The first time you
- choose to select a WAD, you will get a screen asking you for the file
- name of the WAD, or /D to search. After you have one or more WADs and
- you choose to add a PWAD, you will get a screen with the options:
-
- ADD A PWAD
- REMOVE A PWAD
- GO TO THE MAIN MENU
-
- Adding a PWAD will take you back to the filename input screen.
-
- Remove a PWAD will take you to a screen with all the WADs listed. Press
- the number of the WAD to remove it from the list of WADs Doomania will run.
-
- (NOTE: This all sounds really complicated in text, but when you actually
- do it, it should be mostly straight-forward.)
-
- [2.4] OTHER OPTIONS SCREEN
-
- * = Not available when you're using Doomania for Hexen.
- ** = Not available when you're using Doomania for Heretic or Hexen.
-
- These are the other options. To select one, highlight it and press enter.
- A checkmark should appear next to it. To deselect an option do the
- same thing. The checkmark should disappear.
-
- **Make enemies faster and tougher: Kind of like the nightmare skill level
- without enemy respawn.
-
- Play GAME$ without monsters: Hmmm. What does this do?
-
- Play GAME$ without background music: Read the above description.
-
- Play GAME$ without sound effects: Read two lines up.
-
- *Make enemies respawn: Kind of a nasty option, all monsters come back
- to life about a minute after you kill them.
-
- **Make your marine run faster: Basically like holding down the shift key
- without holding down the shift key.
-
- Create a command line paramater file: This option creates a file including
- all the options which you have selected so far. You can then run this
- file without having to select the options. For instance, if you like to run
- Doom II with fast monsters and no music, select the options MAKE ENEMIES
- FASTER AND TOUGHER and PLAY DOOM II WITHOUT SOUND EFFECTS, and select
- CREATE A COMMAND LINE PARAMATER FILE. After typing in a filename, the
- file will be created, and it can then be run be selecting...
-
- Read a comand line paramater file. Type /D to search.
-
- Select difficulty level: Takes you to yet another menu. Details below.
-
- Return to main menu: Returns you to the main menu.
-
- Select a difficulty level: Takes you to the DIFFICULTY SELECTION MENU.
-
- [2.5] DIFFICULTY SELECTION MENU.
-
- This menu shows the five difficulty levels listed on it. You'll note that
- HURT ME PLENTY, BRINGEST THEM ONETH, or SKILL 3 (depending on the game)
- has a check mark next to it. This is the default. This can, of course, be
- changed.
-
- [1] Uncatagorized Pointless Babble-------------------------------------
-
- I HAVE NOT RECIEVED ONE REGISTRATION OR EVEN COMMENT SINCE VERSION 1.0!
- HOW CAN I IMPROVE THE PROGRAM IF I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE
- ABOUT IT? PLEASE SEND ME MAIL WITH COMMENTS (ADDRESSES BELOW), OR EVEN
- REGISTER IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT! DOOMANIA ISN'T *THAT* BAD, IS IT?
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Since Doomania now supports Heretic and Hexen, I need a new name. I'm
- taking suggestions.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Because QuickBasic v4.5 (the program I used to write Doomania) has
- limitations on the size of code it can compile, this version of
- Doomania might be the last major upgrade for a while. I'm about 50
- (yes, literally!) bytes away from the max, so in order to add a lot of
- stuff I would have to optimize the source code a HUGE amount, which I
- already did for version 3.0, so I'm not sure how much more it's possible.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Oh - this is important - unfortunately, due to a database screwup, I
- lost the addresses of a few people who registered Doomania. If you
- are one of those people, please get in touch with me and we'll work it
- out.

- E-Mail if you let me know your E-Mail address when you send in your
- registration fee. Read ORDERME.TXT for more info. Also, let me know if
- you'd register by SWREG on CompuServe if I made it available so I can decide
- if I should put Doomania on it.
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- DISTRIBUTE DOOMANIA!!!! GIVE IT TO EVERYONE! UPLOAD IT EVERYWHERE!
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Be sure to look for the next version of Doomania where you got this one.
